If you don't know your history, you can’t guide your future
New Jersey was the last state in the North to abolish slavery, which they did with a statute in 1804 that would make the process gradual. Although importation of slaves was banned back in 1788, but no free blacks were allowed to settle in the state.
According to Wikipedia: “The 1804 statute and subsequent laws freed children born after the law was passed. African-Americans born to slave mothers after July 4, 1804, had to serve lengthy apprenticeships to the owners of their mothers. Women were freed at 21, but men were not emancipated until the age of 25. Slaves who had been born before these laws were passed were considered, after 1846, as indentured servants who were ‘apprenticed for life.’” http://tinyurl.com/NJ-slavery
I was puffing on my BONG and watching the national prayer breakfast Thursday on C-span when among other things President Barrack Obama said, “And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.”
-- I have a Stalker. I came close to writing about CYBER STALKERS in this weeks Column and had planned to write specifically about my stalker. But why promote his bad juju? I met him close to a year ago as part of my marijuana legalization activism. Now I realize he didn’t want to know me, he wanted to be me and hates me now because he’s not me. Last week I was forced to file terroristic threats and harassment charges against him after he repeatedly emailed me and posted these threats on his Facebook acct...So I’ve changed my mind and don’t plan on getting him any more notoriety, or stroking his manic delusions of grandeur by doing so.
This Columnist thing is new to me. I have to commend Trentonian Columnists Jeff Edelstein and La Parker for coming up with multiple topics everyday for years. It's been harder than I thought and I only do it once a week, they do it three times or more a week! What I didn't expect about this Job was the numerous inboxes and emails I've received from Trentonian readers with Column ideas – and topics. Some are great, some bizarre, some go over my head, some underneath me or I laugh at, then there are those I absolutely just don't want to do and those that I MUST do. This is one of the MUST DO's.
I went to see Selma on Monday, "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day." I smoked two joints on the way and after seeing it, I gave it a 420 on the NJWeedman movie scale. A 500 means it's right on the money, but a 420 is as close as you can get in my THC-enhanced movie evaluations. Other movies that I gave a 420 to were Half Baked, Soul Plane, Friday, How High, and of course Cheech & Chong's Next Movie.
